Super Worm Moon

Moon at Perigee over Genzyme Building, Allston, MA.
I caught this moonset just before dawn after clouds had obscured the moonrise earlier that night. It was the brightest moon since 1993.
From the Farmer’s Almanac: “As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. For this reason, the March full moon is often known as the Full Worm Moon. Northern Native American tribes knew this moon as the Full Crow Moon when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is a Colonial American variation.”

Painters: Masters and Rising Star
Posted in Editorial on February 5th, 2011 by Glenn Kulbako
As a photorealist painter, Scott Prior caught my eye 28 years ago with his massive, exquisitely detailed photorealist painting ‘Nanny and Rose’ (right). A print of it has been in my home for almost as long. So when I walked into William Baczek Fine Arts in Northampton, MA and noticed a woman standing with friends, I said “you look familiar.” It happened to be Prior’s wife Nanny Vonnegut, also a painter (and Kurt Vonnegut’s daughter) and the subject of the painting. Prior’s paintings have always been important to me because his blend of hyper-realism, energized light and ordinary subjects illustrate an almost animist view that all things are infused with spirit. Prior has worked with various familiar motifs close to home: family, domestic still lifes, rural infrastructure and pastoral gardens.
I photographed Prior and Vonnegut (left) at the Gallery’s ‘Annual Still Life Exhibition’ where both painters will be showing through March 12. A portion of ‘Nanny and Scott,’ another large piece, can be seen to the left in the MFA photo above.

David Harrison, seen here with ‘Large Still Life with Roll,’ (2010), lived a few blocks from me in Allston, the Boston “student ghetto,” when we drove cabs together in the early 1980′s. He is currently the featured artist at William Baczek Fine Arts, Northampton, MA and is represented by galleries as far away as Houston. David is married to painter Maureen O’Connor, who has her own opening at the Atlantic Works Gallery in East Boston March 3.
